Former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has sent a message the way of Zlatan Ibrahimovic following the news of his retirement.
The 41-year-old Sweden international opted to call time on an illustrious playing career in which he represented the Reds during the 2016-2018 season under the Portuguese manager, winning both the EFL Cup and the Europa League – his only European success.
Mourinho’s response came as a post on Instagram, which contained multiple clapping emojis and smiley faces, with pictures of the pair’s time together at United.
During the Portuguese’s stint at Manchester United, he acquired Zlatan Ibrahimovic from PSG on a free transfer, which paid off as the Swedish striker netted 29 goals in 53 appearances in all competition helping the Reds to their first major cup title post-Ferguson era.
The relationship between them had grown since their time together, with Ibrahimovic having spoken out candidly about their time as manager and player.
An extract from his book, I Am Zlatan read, “He formed an attachment to me even before we met. He would become a guy I was basically willing to die for.”
“I felt increasingly that this guy gives everything for the team, so I want to give everything for him. It was a quality he had. People were willing to kill for him. No matter how happy I was going to Barca (from Inter in 2009), it was sad to leave Mourinho. That guy is special”, said Zlatan.
