Kylian Mbappe: “I never asked to leave in January”

Kylian Mbappe has refuted claims that he has any intentions of leaving the French club in January.

After reports emerged last week that Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe could depart in January with the striker said to be feeling “betrayed” by the club’s hierarchy, he has however denied the claims that he had any intentions of that kind and feels surprised by the news.

The 23-year-old, who finished sixth for the latest Ballon d’Or, awarded to Karim Benzema on Monday night, stated at the weekend saying,

“I’m very happy (in PSG), I never asked to leave in January. The info came out on the day of the match, I didn’t understand (match against Benfica). I’m not even remotely involved in this news.”

“I was just as shocked as everyone else. People may think I’m involved but I’m not involved at all.” he added.

Sporting director Luis Campos had also stated before the Champions League game with Benfica earlier this month saying, “I work with Kylian Mbappé every day. He’s never asked me to leave in January… he’s never asked the president to leave in January either. That means the report is not a player statement. It’s information.”

As the report points out, Mbappé’s statements to the press at the weekend only covered whether he had asked to leave, not if he wanted to as frustrations over the situation, both from the club and its Qatari owners, rise despite attempts to calm the situation.
