Aston Villa have been linked with a move for soon to be free agent Luis Suarez, who recently paid an emotional farewell to Atletico Madrid after playing his last game for the club on Sunday evening.
Suarez, 35, will depart the La Liga side this summer when his contract expires with Villa reportedly ‘preparing to make an offer’ for the Uruguayan striker, who played with Steven Gerrard at Liverpool from 2010-2014.
Villa had previously been linked with a move for Suarez in January, however a move failed to materialise.
Ahead of his exit from Diego Simeone’s side, Suarez posted an emotional farewell message on his personal Instagram. He said: “Eternally grateful to one by one of the fans for the affection, one by one of the workers of the @atleticodemadrid for the affection of the day to day and my family that always accompanied me!”
The emotions of the player were clear to see as he looked visibly upset in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with Sevilla, which will be his final game for the club. Speaking after the game he paid tribute to the fans of the club that have supported him since his arrival in 2020, where he said: “I thank all the Atletico fans, every one of them. The love they gave me since I arrived has been amazing and I will not forget it. I tried to return it on the pitch, I gave myself 200% to a club that opened its doors to me.
“I will always carry the affection of this club with me after not being able to enjoy myself the previous season. I will take Atletico with me in my heart.”
