Nigeria’s sole survivors in continental competitions this year, Rivers United, have crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup after they lost 2-0 to USM Alger in the quarterfinal second leg tie.

The Pride of Rivers succumbed to a 2-1 loss on aggregate to the Algerian side in the quarter-final of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Port-Harcourt-based club won the first leg of the encounter 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, last weekend, but they failed to build on the advantage as they were sent out by two unreplied goals at the Omar Hamadi Stadium on Sunday.

Abdullah Kanou, the Malian striker, scored both goals for USM Alger to knock Rivers out of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final for the second consecutive season.

Rivers United were thus eliminated 2-1 on aggregate after they won the first leg 1-0 in Nigeria.

The Algerian club, who are the current holders of this competition, took the lead in the 37th minute, before they sealed qualification to the semifinal in the 75th minute.

USM Alger will face Moroccos’s RS Berkane in the semi-final while the Nigerian club will return to fight for a spot in Nigeria’s first-division league as they currently sit 17th on the log.
