Super Eagles Defender Seals Ligue 1 Return with FC Nantes

Chidozie Awaziem signs for Ligue 1 from Colorado Rapids from MLS

Chidozie Awaziem has officially completed a move back to Ligue 1, signing a three-year contract with FC Nantes. The Nigerian international joins the French club from MLS side Colorado Rapids, just months after moving from FC Cincinnati.

Awaziem is no stranger to Nantes, having previously spent the 2018/19 season on loan with the Yellow and Greens from FC Porto, where he made 23 appearances and scored once.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the versatile defender described the move as a return to “home.”

“When the opportunity presented itself, I didn’t hesitate for a second because for me, Nantes is like home. The people are lovely, the club is great, and I was really looking forward to returning. I want to help the club achieve its goals, win trophies, and compete at the highest level,” Awaziem said.

The 28-year-old defender brings a wealth of experience to a Nantes side that has battled relegation in recent seasons. Awaziem’s journey has seen him play in Portugal, Turkey, Spain, Croatia, and the United States, making him a well-rounded addition to the Ligue 1 outfit.

On the international stage, Awaziem has represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and featured in multiple AFCON tournaments (2019, 2021, and 2023).

His experience and leadership are expected to play a key role as Nantes aim to stabilize their squad and push higher up the Ligue 1 table.
