William Troost-Ekong, the Super Eagles vice-captain and AFCON Player of the Tournament, has signed a two-year contract with Saudi Arabia’s Al Kholood.

Troost-Ekong recently made a switch from English club Watford to Greek side PAOK Salonika. However, an enticing offer from Saudi Arabia has prompted him to move again. Initially linked with Saudi club Al Ahli, Troost-Ekong ultimately opted for Al Kholood, a newly promoted side. His decision comes with a substantial pay increase and tax-free benefits.

The Nigerian international has had a rollercoaster year. After leading the Super Eagles to a second-place finish at AFCON 2024 in Ivory Coast and earning Player of the Tournament honors, he suffered a season-ending injury. Despite this setback, PAOK Salonika ended their season on a high by winning the Greek league title.

Troost-Ekong made a strong comeback and played a crucial role in PAOK’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers. Before his departure, he will feature in a key Champions League qualifier against Swedish team Malmö. After this match, he will head to Saudi Arabia to finalize his move to Al Kholood, which includes an option for a third year.

Last season, Al Kholood finished third in the Saudi second division, securing promotion to the Saudi Pro League with 62 points from 34 matches. Troost-Ekong’s arrival is seen as a major boost for the club, bringing valuable leadership, defensive skills, and international experience as they aim to solidify their position in the top flight.

This transfer is a significant coup for Al Kholood as they prepare for their debut season in Saudi Arabia’s top league.
