Zinedine Zidane and three ex-Madrid players in contention to take over from Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid are on the lookout for a Carlo Ancelotti replacement, after the Italian confirmed that he will be joining the Brazilian national team as head coach at the end of next season.

Zinedine Zidane, who previously had two successful spells as Madrid boss, could be set to take over for the third time.

The Frenchman has been out of the coaching job since he left Madrid in 2021, and has maintained a good relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

It is not yet certain that Madrid will acquire his services as Juventus are also said to be interested in getting the legendary midfielder as coach.

Another former Madrid player, Xabi Alonso – who had an impressive debut season with Bayer Leverkusen has been identified as an alternative to Zidane.

Madrid might find it difficult to convince the Spaniard though as he recently reiterated his commitment to his current club.

“I’m happy here with the team and the club. I’m not worried about my future.

Asked if he would see out the end of his contract, that is set to run until 2024, he replied: “That’s correct.”

Raul Gonzalez and Alvaro Arbeloa can come into the reckoning if moves for Zidane and Alonso fail, as they have shown promise while coaching the club’s U-19 and U-18s.
