Victor Osimhen subbed off in the Napoli vs Cagliari clash over injury concerns

Victor Osimhen has scored two goals in two matches for Napoli since his return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen was forced off the pitch due to injury during Napoli’s Serie A clash against Cagliari on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

This incident serves as further confirmation that Osimhen – who was a key player for both club and country – bravely competed in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against Côte d’Ivoire despite sustaining a significant injury.

It was Osimhen’s second game for Napoli after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, which Nigeria lost to Ivory Coast.

Following Napoli’s 1-0 loss to AC Milan, Osimhen was deemed unfit to participate in their subsequent match against Genoa.

However, he was cleared to play in the UEFA Champions League fixture against Barcelona, where he scored a crucial equalizer.

In the clash against Cagliari, Osimhen once again showcased his attacking prowess by scoring the opening goal for Napoli. However, Zito Luvumbo’s late equaliser denied Napoli and Osimhen a victory.

New Napoli coach Francesco Calzona has given an explanation as to why he replaced the striker for the second game in a row.

Earlier last week, the Super Eagles star was subbed off, moments after scoring in the Champions League against Barcelona. Again, he has been subbed for the second game in a row since returning to the Italian side.

“He was only tired. Victor is a fantastic guy. He scored two goals in two matches and will slowly get back in shape,” via Football Italia.

Calzona added that the striker was affected by the AFCON.

“Don’t forget he played at AFCON. Players are devastated when they return. He was tired also against Barcelona, but players always want to stay on the pitch.”

Calzona’s warning to Osimhen

Reports have also suggested that Calzona had sent a warning to Osimhen and Napoli players after the Nigerian was subbed off shortly after scoring against Barcelona.

“I keep the players on the field who are doing well, I don’t look at their names. Matteo Politano had an excellent match – he was defending well too with great vigour. Those who do not do well can be removed.”

The 25-year-old has now scored 10 goals in 20 appearances this season.

A video captured by CBS Sports Golazo spotted Osimhen limping off the field, prompting a substitution. This latest setback adds to Napoli’s challenges, as they currently occupy the 9th position in the Serie A standings.

Napoli host Juventus in their next match, looking to register their second win in seven matches in all competitions.
