Barcelona have called for the resignation of La Liga President Javier Tebas after accusations were made against him for providing false evidence against the Blaugranas in the handling of the “Referee Negreira case”.
The club has been charged with allegedly making improper payments to the former vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee as reported by the Spanish state prosecutor’s office.
The Spanish news outlet La Vanguardia published a report claiming that Tebas provided false evidence to the Public Prosecutor’s office regarding former Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell.
According to the report, Tebas sent a handwritten document by ex-Barcelona employee Josep Contreras, who died in 2022, but the authenticity of the document is in question, and the document found was decades old rather than recent.
In response to these allegations in the La Vanguardia report, Barcelona has released a statement on their official website.
“Given the seriousness of the information that appeared today Monday in La Vanguardia, in which the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, is linked as the executor in presenting false evidence to the Prosecutor’s Office to incriminate our Club, FC Barcelona wishes to express its deep anger, indignation and dismay”
“For this reason, we urgently request the president of LaLiga to appear publicly to offer explanations, beyond the tweet sent at dawn by Mr. Tebas, fleeing from the studio and with a threatening patina”.
“A handful of media and opinion-makers have participated in this harassment with more or less bad intentions, and with LaLiga behind the scenes fanning the fire against our Club, with contributions from its president that have only gone in one direction: trying to condemn us before public opinion before for the facts to be judged”.
“It is not the first time that the president of LaLiga has used all his media machinery to blow up FC Barcelona but, apart from his usual nonsense, we could never have imagined that he would have tried to incriminate our Club with false evidence”.
“The news published today by La Vanguardia is so serious that it should alert all LaLiga clubs, due to practices that do not fit in with the functions attributed to the president of LaLiga”.
“Only for this fact, that of attributing functions that do not correspond to him, although also out of dignity and respect for the presidency of LaLiga, Mr. Tebas should resign from his function. However, aware of his obsession with persecuting FC Barcelona and constantly showing his aversion and manifest antipathy towards our Club, we understand that the current president of LaLiga will persist in his behaviour of continuing to harm our Club.”
Javier Tebas’ response to Barcelona resignation calls
In his defence, Tebas has taken to Twitter to respond to the Catalans directly on his official Twitter account.
“@FCBARCELONA_ES, before submitting the letter to the Prosecutor’s Office, @laliga’s legal counsel informed the Delegate Commission on February 21, of the content of the letter and its documents,” he wrote.
“Right of rectification requested from @LaVanguardia.”
Tebas has also said La Vanguardia made mistakes in their report.
“The information disseminated in this article includes statements and erroneous information, lacking supporting evidence and which, distorted as they are, seriously damage my honor and reputation, as well as the image La Liga,” Tebas said in a statement to the newspaper.
