Laporta wants Mascherano to return to Barcelona

Barcelona is interested in bringing Javier Mascherano back to the club as a coach at their renowned development academy La Masia, according to rumours.

Between 2010 and 2018, Mascherano spent eight years with Barcelona, winning two Champions League medals and five LaLiga crowns during his time in Catalunya. The 37-year-old has pursued a coaching career since retiring in 2020 and is presently the boss of Argentina’s Under-20 team, but a return to Barcelona could be on the cards shortly. According to a report in the Spanish magazine SPORT, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is eager to rehire illustrious former players in various capacities, including coaching and management jobs.

Xavi, the former captain, is now the first-team head coach and has a good rapport with Mascherano from their time together on the field.

According to the article, Laporta wants to bring Mascherano back to work with the club’s grassroots and younger players, whether it’s now or in a year’s time. Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, and Gerard Pique have all come through Barcelona’s renowned La Masia youth system.

Mascherano will need an appropriate role at the academy to leave his employment in South America, with a coaching career in his birthplace also being an option.
