Stanley Nwabali has been warmly welcomed back to South Africa as a hero amid fears that won’t be the case after his penalty shootout heroics against Bafana Bafana at the recent AFCON.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside had said on national television that Nwabali has been warned to stay away from South Africa after he denied the country a place at the AFCON Final.
However, the giant goalkeeper was received by hundreds of Chippa United fans on arrival at the Port Elizabeth airport Tuesday.
He took selfies with the fans and joined them in singing the club’s songs.
Chippa United colourful president publicly supported the Super Eagles against South Africa in their AFCON semifinal clash because of his goalkeeper.
Nwabali made the most of his chance with the Super Eagles at the AFCON as he played all seven matches leading up to the tournament final.
He received cash gifts, a national honour and was made a chief in his hometown.
