Spartak Moscow captain Quincy Promes has been detained at Dubai airport while preparing to return to Russia. This comes just weeks after Promes was sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking.
He was involved in an attempt to smuggle 1.3 tonnes of cocaine into Europe.
Despite his legal troubles, Promes has continued to lead Spartak Moscow from the front, scoring 8 goals and providing 8 assists this season.
The Dutchman’s involvement in the drug trafficking scheme was revealed during the investigation. Prosecutors uncovered his use of the code name ‘Fantasma’ in encrypted messages.
Promes opted to stay in Moscow due to the absence of an extradition treaty between Russia and the Netherlands, allowing him to continue playing for Spartak despite his legal woes.
However, his troubles extend beyond drug trafficking, as he was also sentenced to an additional one and a half years in prison for stabbing his cousin at a party in Utrecht in July 2020.
Spartak Moscow, currently preparing for an important match against Zenit, faces uncertainty with their captain detained and embroiled in legal issues.
