Rangers hope John Souttar and Ben Davies can follow the steps of Carlos Cuellar

Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought in John Souttar and Ben Davies from Hearts and Liverpool respectively.

Sporting director Ross Wilson added the duo of Ben Davies and John Souttar to Rangers over the summer.

John Souttar and Ben Davies joined Rangers from Hearts and Liverpool respectively.

Rangers defender John Souttar has been ruled out of action until after the World Cup with an ankle injury, while right-back Ben Davies has started the last two league matches in goal for the club since joining on loan from Barnsley earlier this month.

Van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson will be hoping Souttar and Davies can follow in the footsteps of great central defenders who have played for Rangers in the past. One such defender was Carlos Cuellar, who joined the club in 2007 for £2m from CA Osasuna.

The Spanish centre-back featured in 36 Premiership games and played 19 times in Europe. He also played in the final of the SFA Cup as Gers beat Queen of the South to win the trophy.

Rangers made a 290% profit on the initial £2m they spent on Cuellar. The club also won the SFA Cup in his first season at Ibrox. Aston Villa signed him from Rangers for £7.8m in the summer of 2008.
