Super Eagles’ performance at AFCON 2024 will determine manager Jose Peseiro’s future – NFF

Jose Peseiro deliberating on next steps as coach
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said that the future of Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro will be determined by the team's performance at the African Nations Cup which will be hosted by Cote d'Ivoire in January, 2024.

Peseiro is presently out of contract as coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but from all indications, it seems likely his contract will be renewed following the successful qualification to the African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

Sources claim the new deal he’s to sign will carry a mandate for him to reach at least the semi-final of the AFCON competition next year, to trigger a two-year extension. It is expected to be a short-term deal that would cover the period leading to the AFCON games before being considered by the NFF for a long-term deal.

The General Secretary of the federation, Sanusi Mohammed made this known in a chat with Promptnewsonline,

“His performance would also be assessed after the Nations Cup before opening a fresh discussion with him. Our focus now is to prepare the team for a super outing in Ivory Coast.”

“If the federation is to renew his contract, it must be a collective decision taking by the Executive Board”, he added.

He also stated that Peseiro was not given any condition rather than taking the Super Eagles to the semi-final of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

He however frowned at the news making the round that the NFF has extended Peseiro’s contract.

“It is unfortunate that some people are busy writing falsehood. Honestly, the leadership of the football house has not held any meeting with Peseiro over his contract or extension. For now the Eagles coach has a valid contract till Nations Cup,” Sanusi explained.

Super Eagles have qualified for the 2024 African Nations Cup topping Group A with 12 points in five matches. While fourteen other countries including the hosts, Ivory Coast have also qualified for the 24-team tournament.
