Leeds United fire Jesse Marsch despite helping the club avoid relegation last season. He has only won two of their last 15 games this season.
Leeds United have confirmed the sacking of manager Jesse Marsch following the weekend 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.
The 49-year-old American was appointed as Marcelo Bielsa’s successor in February 2022, and he helped the club avoid relegation, which was secured with a dramatic last-day win at Brentford in May.
However, Leeds have not won in the Premier League since a 4-3 thriller against AFC Bournemouth on November 5. They now sit 17th in the Premier League table, level on points with relegation rivals Forest.
A club statement wrote: “Jesse joined the club in February 2022 and was instrumental in keeping the club in the Premier League on the final day of last season.”
“We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”
“The process of appointing a new head coach is underway and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days.”
Speaking after Sunday’s loss to Forest in what proved to be his final post-match interview as Leeds boss, Marsch said:
“I’m almost in disbelief that we found a way to lose because for me, we’re better in almost every phase”.
“We controlled the match and we should win but right now, we are finding ways to lose and that’s difficult to swallow”.
“I have to find a way to get more out of the group. I have to make sure that we don’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to find a way to stay strong and keep going. But I take responsibility. I have to find a way to get more out of us to make sure when we’re on top of games, we don’t lose them.
“It feels like it’s moving in the right direction, but it’s not enough. We have to get more out of it.”
Leeds travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night to face Manchester United led by Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas who currently serve as co-caretakers until a new manager is announced.
