The 29-year-old was one of six people stabbed during the attack from which one person died. Mari was told by doctors that he was lucky to avoid life-threatening injuries as he underwent surgery.

The Spaniard had surgery to reconstruct two injured muscles in his back and was ruled out for a couple of months.

Pablo Mari is stepping up recovery and stated that he is taking things “step by step” in a Twitter post.

In an Instagram post shortly after the incident, Mari said:

‘After the hard moment we experienced yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that fortunately we are all fine despite the circumstances, and we want to thank all the messages of support and affection that we are receiving.

‘In addition, we want to send our condolences and all our strength to the family and friends of the deceased person, and we sincerely wish that all injured people recover as soon as possible.’

Mari joined Monza on loan from Arsenal in the summer on a season long loan and had played eight times for the Italian side, scoring once.
