Sporting Lagos was in inspired form this weekend at home when they hosted fellow South-western side Remo Stars in a derby battle which ended, recording their biggest-ever victory to the dismay of the Sky Blue stars.
The flamboyant Lagos side wrote their names in the history books of the NPFL on Sunday with the victory, thumping over league rivals Remo Stars 4-1.
The newly-promoted side, led by former Remo striker Junior Lokosa, opened the scoring in the fifth minute from the penalty spot, following a foul on new signing, Godwin Odibo from a counter-attacking run.
New signing, Paschal Durugbor, then doubled the advantage before Remo pulled one back via an own goal to stay in the game at the break.
The game’s standout moment came when Philip Kehinde acrobatically fired home a sublime bicycle kick to make it 3-1 to the rampant Tech Boys moments after the restart.
There was still time for Isaac Annor to get in on the act and increase Sporting’s lead to wrap up a brilliant and famous win for Sporting.
Quoting a user on X, the Remo Stars coach, Daniel Ogunmodede commented on the fine performances of the inexperienced Lagos side shown to his side, acknowledging their display and the tactical prowess of coach Paul.
“The position of Sporting Lagos on the table is not a true representation of how they perform and how good they play”. — Coach Dan Ogunmodede via @SportingLagos’ space
This 4-1 scoreline represents Sporting’s biggest win since gaining promotion to the Nigerian top flight.
Their impressive dismantling of one of the division’s most established sides will have certainly turned heads across the league.
For Remo, who finished as runners-up last season, this heavy defeat will be a chastening experience as Sporting’s confident and clinical performance simply blew them away.
